From weekend homes to get-away cabins in the mountains, by the sea,
or in the woods, this architecture embodies our longing for
lounging in nature. For the first time in the history of humankind,
more people live in cities than in the country. Yet, at the same
time, more and more city dwellers are yearning for rural farms,
mountain cabins, or seaside homes. These kinds of refuges offer
modern men and women a promise of what urban centers usually cannot
provide: quiet, relaxation, being out of reach, getting back to
basics, feeling human again. Rock the Shack is a survey of such
contemporary refuges from around the world--from basic to luxury.
The book features a compelling range of sparingly to intricately
furnished cabins, cottages, second homes, tree houses,
transformations, shelters, and cocoons. The look of the included
structures from the outside is just as important as the view from
inside. What these diverse projects have in common is an
exceptional spirit that melds the uniqueness of a geographic
location with the individual character of the building's owner and
architect.
In this unique 2-volume, 800-page book with more than 2,500 images, Marilyn Neuhart tells the story, to paraphrase Charles Eames himself, of how Eames furniture got to be the way it is.
Since his 2009 solo exhibition Local Studies at Fotostiftung Schweiz, Swiss Joel Tettamanti has gradually built up his reputationas a photographer. Assignments for international magazines and global company groups take him to known and unknown places all over the world, which he more or less coincidentally approaches as an artist. In his oeuvre, Tettamanti focuses on places that give each location its specific identity. Moving from unspoiled countryside across the borders between nature and civilisation to the centres of agglomeration, he explores the details where seemingly rationally constructed civilisation encounters natural forms. The places Tettamanti reveals in his photographs seem somehow surreal; they show just how absurd man-made structures can appear. Works 2001 - 2019 also appears as a special edition, reviving the photo book as a medium in times of digitalisation. It is a professionally and conventionally published book combined with print-on-demand production. The artist offers various types of special editions, thus enabling customers to partici - pate in the design process by selecting photos for their own edition. Special editions are available from our publishing company. We are happy to inform you of our procedures and conditions.
Not long ago, porcelain, glass and ceramics were almost exclusively used to make ostentatious objects best suited for display in grandmother's cabinet. But now these classic materials are experiencing a renaissance. Today, they are increasingly being utilised in playful ways by a new wave of designers and artists, who are inspired by Modernism's clear forms as well as an ironic depiction of figures, kitsch and the Romantic. Armed with these influences and an expanded repertoire of forms made possible by technological developments such as rapid prototyping, these designers and artists are manifesting their creative visions in unconventional objects made of these fragile materials. Fragiles is an eclectic collection of such contemporary work. This book presents industrial applications made from porcelain, glass and ceramics such as the exclusive, futuristic tableware now in use in avant-garde restaurants around the world. It also features artistic glass objects by Arne Quinze and Jerszy Seymour as well as striking porcelain products by Jurgen Bey, Marcel Wanders and Jaime Hayon. In addition to these projects by renowned creatives, Fragiles also contains an exciting selection of recent cutting-edge work by emerging talents. The examples shown in Fragiles range from the experimental to evocative retroinspired reinterpretations. The spectrum and quality of these innovative projects shows a current generation of designers and artists just how relevant and challenging working with these traditional materials can be.
